A major in mathematics is one of the most versatile fields of study offered by colleges and universities, and offers many different career opportunities for the graduates. Though it might not be the easiest subject to some, not a day goes by without every student using a mathematics concept. When someone goes to the mall to buy a new outfit, the buyer has to be able to count whether there is enough money, and the seller has to be able to give change. Or, the buyer must have enough skills to balance their checkbook and not overdraw their account. Though this is not the most advanced form of mathematics, banks make millions of dollars each year on overdraft fees from customers who forget to add and subtract properly!

All employment fields, need mathematics majors. A banker needs someone who is proficient in algebra to determine if a person is eligible for a loan. A computer geologist must use advanced calculations to determine the best location for a new oil drill. An accountant helps his clients add up their income and pay taxes according to the rules set out by the IRS.  He also helps them find ways to subtract expenses and lower the taxes they pay. In the military, mathematicians are used for figuring coordinates for particular locations or supply requisitions. In architecture, geometry is used to create all of the beautiful buildings that are recognized all over the world. If the building requires a specific amount of concrete and blocks for a strong foundation, the project estimator must know how to calculate and make the adjustments. One small math error, and those buildings would come crashing down!

The study of mathematics is not for everyone. Because it is expensive, you will definitley need to apply for college scholarships. Some students are not comfortable with the sameness of equations and the rigid structure of formulas. For a mathematician to take a problem, such as the amount of material needed by a company to complete a project, and find the correct solution is personally satisfying and financially rewarding for their employer.

Mathematicians are essential to everyday life and the everyday work place.  Without them, our world would not be where it is today, nor could it hope to progress. Formulas and equations are used everyday to operate machinery, make better technology, and discover new innovations. If a student wants to have the best opportunity for different career paths, a major in a career filled with the study of mathematics would be the best fit.
