Author Andy A. Afrouz shares this technical subject of “Engineering Design aspects in Geomechanics and Ground Control for Mining and other Excavations” (published by Xlibris) with motivation to transferring some of his lifelong professional knowledge and experience to the next generation of engineers, researchers and consultants; to help preparing them for their present or future endeavors in the field. This work encompasses excavation engineering; geotechnical, mining and civil engineering; rock mechanics and ground control. It blends innovative theories with tried, tested and proven practical application at various sites where safety is of prime importance and failures can lead to catastrophic collapses resulting loss of life and or money.

“Some of the main prerequisites to maintaining stability around a surface and or underground excavations by natural and or artificial means are to understand rock type(s), mechanics of ground movement, motive for utilization of an excavation, length of time an excavation is expected to be kept open and stable, and geometry of the ground failure or potential failure zones”, Afrouz explains. The reason is that different failure mechanisms usually require different method of stabilization. The mechanism of ground failure is complex. It is influenced by numerous complicated parameters, most of which are use and time dependent. This book provides practical examples on how analytical design principles can be utilized for engineering design of excavations, ground support and reinforcement under static, dynamic, passive and active mining and or other excavation conditions. Numerous case studies are included in the book, its appendix and with plenty of references cited in this work.

The book is intended for the engineers, researchers, consultants, technical managers, teachers, and students who are engaged in the aforementioned fields as well as rock mechanics, geological, mining, civil and petroleum engineering, and those who are active in any kind of surface or underground excavation, drilling and blasting.
