Below, Baldoni shared his influences and inspiration for the book in an interview with Bibliomotion:

What inspired you to write MOXIE?

JB: Too often studies of leadership do not emphasis what it takes to tackle adversity. Yet as Warren Bennis taught us few leaders ever achieve much without being tested. MOXIE provides a roadmap for discovering your strengths and employing them when you need them to tackle challenges and defeats. MOXIE provides insights into the guts, gumption and determination, leaders need to beat the odds.

What was your favorite part of the writing and publishing process?

JB: By far, the opportunity to watch the book being printed in my hometown of Ann Arbor, Michigan. John Edwards, CEO of Edwards Brothers Malloy, invited me to watch MOXIE roll off the presses. The Edwards family started the book printing business in 1893 and from it have sprung a number of great printing houses. Today EBM is a global organization with facilities around the world.

Who do hope reads your book? What do you want them to get from it?

JB: MOXIE is intended for anyone looking for an edge in their ability to lead others. The principles of MOXIE are rooted in guts and determination in the application of a goal. The factors of MOXIE– mindfulness, opportunity, character, innovation and engagement – hold strong lessons for anyone seeking to make a positive difference.

Who was your #1 influencer for your work?

JB: My influences in my work are many. They include Marshall Goldsmith, Jim Kouzes, and Michael Useem all of whom I know professionally. The management thinker with the most influence over me has been Peter Drucker. His blend of theory with history and practical wisdom sets the standard that I seek to emulate.

What are you reading right now?

JB: Of course I keep up with all the current management literature but my passion is music and so what I read now are musical scores. I am a big fan of the American Songbook so I am always eager to play pieces by George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Harold Arlen, Richard Rogers, Duke Ellington, and Jerome Kern.

About MOXIE:

Leaders with moxie are those with the courage to stand up and be counted; those with the ability to take action; and those with the desire to win recognition for their teams as well as for themselves.

In Moxie: The Secret to Bold and Gutsy Leadership, internationally recognized leadership expert John Baldoni shares the stories of leaders from all walks of life including business, politics, sports and the arts, and explores how they exemplify moxie. Baldoni shows how leaders can combine thought and action to take themselves and their organizations to new levels, inspiring innovation and effective leadership.

Leaders with moxie burn with a desire to make something good happen; they are ambitious and willing to sacrifice for long-term gain; they know how to pick themselves up after a defeat. Those with moxie can read people and situations and know how and when to execute for results.

The world “moxie” also serves as an acronym for Motivation, Opportunity, an X factor, Innovation, and Engagement that work together for success.

Moxie is one-part courage, one-part can-do spirit, and one-part recognition; it is a concept that the modern leader would be wise to adopt.
