Discrete data capture in synoptic pathology reports published by Dove Medical Press

Pathology and Laboratory Medicine International has published the review “Current status of discrete data capture in synoptic surgical pathology and cancer reporting”.

As corresponding author Dr Lewis Hassell says “Synoptic reporting has come a long way since the ideas began to appear in the pathology literature in the early 1990s, 25 years ago. But we still lag painfully behind current data management capabilities, and looming imperatives as well as opportunities for individual patient, and population health associated with synoptic reporting, and associated discrete data capture.”

Dr Hassell continues “With only very selective wide-scale adoption of discrete data capture capabilities, and still many implementation barriers, it is going to take some concerted effort, and funding to reach the level of meaningful use of this important capability in modern healthcare. All the stakeholders need to understand the implications of this and be willing to shoulder their share of the costs in order for our patients and our society to reap the important benefits.”

As Professor Paul J. Zhang, Editor-in-Chief, explains “I expect this review article from our journal to be a high impact one to pathology community around the globe.”
