New York, NY (PRWEB) September 10, 2014

Actress and environmental advocate Jessica Alba today joined officials from the Mount Sinai Health System to formally open The Honest Company Ultra Clean Room. Part of Mount Sinai’s Children’s Environmental Health Center (CEHC), the new, state-of-the-art facility will measure, with greater sensitivity, the impact of chemicals in the environment on children’s health.

“The Honest Company Ultra Clean Room is the gold standard in analytical chemistry laboratories, and we want to thank Jessica Alba, Christopher Gavigan and the rest of our friends at The Honest Company for their generous support of this endeavor,” said Kenneth L. Davis, MD, Chief Executive Officer and President of the Mount Sinai Health System. “The new clean room will be an integral part of our Laboratory for Molecular Environmental Chemistry and further establishes Mount Sinai as a leader in the field of children’s environmental health.”

The Honest Company Ultra Clean Room is specially equipped with technology that significantly reduces the risk of sample contamination and allows for evaluation of chemicals at concentrations as low as parts per trillion. Already, groundbreaking work has been conducted in the Ultra Clean Room, where a novel “biomarker” was developed to determine prior environmental exposures in children.

“When we started The Honest Company, I was excited to create a brand that families could trust for safer, more affordable options in non-toxic and eco-friendly lifestyle products,” said Ms. Alba. “Hearing the passion from our customers for more products and more information inspired us to go a step further. By supporting the team here at Mount Sinai with The Honest Company Ultra Clean Room, we’re creating a space where chemical and environmental research can generate valuable knowledge to forge a real change in the marketplace and, ultimately, people’s everyday lives. Seeing The Honest Company Ultra Clean Room at Mount Sinai is a dream come true.“

Along with Dr. Davis, joining Ms. Alba during the ribbon-cutting ceremony at Mount Sinai’s Atran-Berg Building were Dennis S. Charney, MD, Anne and Joel Ehrenkranz Dean, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and President for Academic Affairs, Mount Sinai Health System; Philip J. Landrigan, MD, MSc, Director of the Children’s Environmental Health Center at Mount Sinai; Christopher Gavigan, Founder and Chief Products Officer, The Honest Company; Brian Lee, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer, The Honest Company; Sean Kane, Co-Founder and President, The Honest Company; Robert O. Wright, MD, MPH, Professor and Vice Chair, Department of Preventive Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai; and Manish Arora, BDS, MPH, PhD, Assistant Professor of Preventive Medicine at Mount Sinai.

The Laboratory for Molecular Environmental Chemistry is a collaboration between the CEHC, led by Director Philip J. Landrigan, MD, MSc and the Mindich Child Health and Development Institute at Mount Sinai, led by Director Bruce D. Gelb, MD. The Laboratory supports innovative research, pioneered by the CEHC’s Deputy Director Robert O. Wright, MD, MPH, to understand the impacts of environmental chemicals on children’s health and guide the development of new approaches to prevention and treatment.

“The ability to measure extremely low levels of exposure, even levels as small as parts per trillion, gives us the ability to understand how chemicals and other compounds impact human health – and especially children’s health,” said Dr. Landrigan. “The Honest Company Ultra Clean Room makes such critically important analysis possible.”

“We understand the unfortunate reality that chronic illness and disease, like asthma, developmental disabilities, allergies, and cancers are dramatically rising, especially in children,” said Gavigan. “At The Honest Company, we absolutely listen to doctors, like Dr. Phil Landrigan regarding how environmental toxicity is shown to attribute to illnesses, and we always take all necessary actions to create safe, non-toxic products that don’t use any chemicals of concern. Today we want to encourage other brands and retailers to stand with us and do the same, as we hope that The Honest Company Ultra Clean Room will serve the researchers and doctors at Mount Sinai as a place for groundbreaking, actionable data to ensure that families of today and tomorrow are safer and healthier.”
