One of the most commonly studied tales from ancient Greece is the story of Sophocles’ Oedipus the King, the tragic story of a hero driven to seek the truth. Lean & Hungry Theater is putting a spin on the classic drama for the airwaves on Sunday, November 16th broadcasting LIVE on WAMU 88.5 FM at 6:00 p.m. EST. This performance is hosted in partnership with THEARC, Town Hall Education Arts Recreation Campus. Tickets go on sale on Friday, October 17th at http://www.LeanAndHungryTheater.com.

The audience will find themselves in a Chicago congregation where the story of Oedipus The King is a minister’s topic for Sunday’s sermon. The Pastor’s tale unfolds in the fictional West African country of “Thebes.” Original music composition by Lean & Hungry veteran composer Tom Carman will center on traditional African instrumentation, including djembe and kora. The cast features the talents of former African Continuum Artistic Director Jennifer Nelson, A.J. Calbert, Duyen Washington, William T. Newman Jr. and the 20-voice gospel choir from St. Philip the Evangelist Episcopal Church in Anacostia. Join us at 5:00 p.m. for our pre-show marketplace where visitors can find a wide range of hand-crafted items.

“It’s an exciting time for Lean & Hungry Theater,” said Artistic Director Jessica Hansen. “We have been working toward collaborations with Ward 7 organizations for many years, in our mission to support classroom teachers with accessible forms of the classics. In January, we taught a series of workshops on Romeo and Juliet at Chavez PCS, and this production continues our development in Ward 7 with the partnerships of THEARC and the St. Philip’s Episcopal Church.”
