Getting your #literature review right….
I can’t recommend this highly enough. It is lucid and step-by-step enough
for undergrads as well — those in the sciences have to grapple with the
lit review early, as the introduction to a full formal lab report. The
insight that you are educating yourself with the review process, both to
fine-focus your inquiry topic and to organize your attack, is invaluable.
Not enough people teach this as a specific skill.
I would add another few purely practical notes — in the online search
process, keep brief notes, by hand if necessary, when you first locate a
good article as to why you chose it to xerox or e-mail home. This will
help when you get to that phase of confronting the pile of stuff and
beginning to extract relevant info. In the same vein, if you even think
you will use an article, enter the full reference citation into a running
alphabetized list of sources that you start as a separate file, as soon as
you begin searching; and conform all the formats to the one you use in the
paper as you go. You will not get stuck typing the reference section at
the end when you are tired — or God forbid cutting and pasting it together
into a multi-format mess — you just have to nuke the entries you didn’t
use.
A lit review might be a document unto itself sometimes; but it is far more
often a tool that can be undertaken at any stage of research and writing —
any time you want to find out what the experts in the field know about
something.
Very well done! Thank you! I am in the midst of writing my lit review and
it is the most difficult part of writing a thesis. I encountered every
frustrating dilemma you covered here because the professor responsible to
teach us this information was insufficient. Hidden treasure i found while
scrolling through youtube searching for encouragement after I had given up
writing for the night.

“They say / I say” is brilliant. Students often don’t know how to
grammatically lay down the turns of argument, even when they have the basic
structure in their heads. This is a wonderful collection of templates and
explanations for introducing all the logical subtleties into argumentative
expression.
