Tampa, FL (PRWEB) April 28, 2015

Recently, the American Lung Association gave Tampa’s ozone an “F” grade, which is the direct result of high air pollution. All this week, people dedicated to making the environment a better place are advocating for cleaner air. As part of Air Quality Awareness Week, the Lung Institute is joining the fight for better air quality by hosting an event during lunch in Lykes Gaslight Park.

In hopes of reaching out to individuals and gather support for working toward cleaner air, the Lung Institute team will raise public awareness by offering fun and games for a chance to play in the park. With a giant Jenga game filled with air quality facts and over-sized fortunetellers, participants will be able to interact with advocates while learning how they can make the world a cleaner place. A great place to start: a desk plant. To encourage citizens to join in the fun in downtown Tampa during Air Quality Awareness Week, the Lung Institute is giving out a variety of desk plants to beautify your workspace and to promote fresh, clean air.

Air Quality Awareness Week is sponsored by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Center for Disease Control (CDC). Every April, people are asked to think about how they impact the air in their everyday lives. Making a difference is as easy as switching to a reusable water bottle and carpooling to work. Recent statistics estimate that 11 percent of outdoor air pollution-caused deaths are from COPD and 22 percent of indoor air pollution-caused deaths are from COPD.

As an increased risk factor for debilitating lung diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and interstitial lung disease, the health advocates at the Lung Institute hope to raise awareness about the impact of air pollution on the lungs. It is estimated that over 75 million people in the United States are living in areas with unhealthy air. The Lung Institute is ready to make a difference.
