IPSWICH, Mass. (PRWEB) November 18, 2014

Charles Macias MD, MPH, FAAP, Associate Professor of Pediatrics of Baylor College of Medicine/Texas Children’s Hospital, has won the first EBSCO/PEMSoft award for “Outstanding Technological Innovations in Pediatric Emergency Care.” Dr. Ron Dieckmann, PEMSoft Chief Medical Officer, presented Dr. Macias with the award during the proceedings of the American Academy of Pediatrics in San Diego.

Dr. Macias is the fellowship and research program director at Baylor and the Director of Evidence Based Outcomes Center and Center for Clinical Effectiveness. The new EBSCO/PEMSoft award was presented to the entire Pediatric Septic Shock Collaborative, directed by Dr. Macias.

The collaborative engaged representatives at 47 children’s hospitals and related institutions in a multiple year investigation to improve the quality of care to children with suspected sepsis related illness. The project included the development of national metrics and the implementation of rapid cycle process improvement in participating institutions, which has been credited with improved process and outcomes of care, including an eight percent reduction in mortality for severe sepsis.

Addressing a large audience of pediatricians during the award ceremony, Dr. Dieckmann commented that the honoree’s 35-page resume had required an entire evening to fully digest. “Charles is a highly distinguished and inspirational recipient of the first EBSCO/PEMSoft Technological Innovations Award. He is a world class scholar, teacher and educator and has demonstrated in the national pediatric septic shock collaborative advanced methodologies for using technology in multi-institutional clinical studies.”

The Technological Innovations Award from EBSCO will be conferred annually upon a pediatrician or pediatric emergency medicine physician who has contributed significantly to technological improvements in pediatric emergency care. The award includes $ 1,000 honoraria, registration, travel and hotel for the AAP’s annual National Conference and Exhibition and a year’s subscription to PEMSoft.

Designed by pediatricians, emergency physicians and other medical specialists, EBSCO Health’s PEMSoft is a pediatric evidence-based point-of-care medical reference tool for hospitals, emergency departments, clinics, pediatric group practices, transport services and medical schools. The vast content in PEMSoft addresses the entire spectrum of neonatal, infant, child, adolescent and young adult health. PEMSoft authors adhere to a strict evidence-based editorial policy focused on systematic identification, evaluation and consolidation of practice-changing clinical literature.
