NAPW honors Sheryl N. Starns as a 2014 Professional Woman of the Year. She is recognized with this prestigious distinction for leadership in insurance. As the largest networking organization of professional women in the country, the National Association of Professional Women is a powerfully vibrant networking community with over 600,000 members and nearly 300 Local Chapters.

“I’m passionate about helping people understand what’s available; what rights they have as far as insurance,” says Ms. Starns, Senior Actuarial Analyst at Osborn, Carreiro & Associates.

Ms. Starns has always had a passion for numbers and majored in Mathematics during college. Deciding she did not want to go into teaching, Ms. Starns settled on becoming an Actuary in the insurance industry, knowing it was a career where she could use her talent for numbers and analyzing. For nearly 25 years, she has amassed a wealth of industry knowledge and honed her skills at a number of insurance companies, including Blue Cross Blue Shield and Continental American Life Insurance Co.

For the last 12 years, Ms. Starns has been with Osborn, Carreiro & Associates, a full-service actuarial consulting firm in Little Rock, AK. In her role, she focuses on self-insured group compliance with the Affordable Care Act. She previously worked with HIPPA small group compliance, Universal Life products and PC illustration / rating programs. “With the Affordable Care Act, for example, there are mandated benefit summaries for everyone,” she says. “I have to know the Act. It’s quite long and involved.” With the many complexities of today’s healthcare industry, Ms. Starns knows the importance of staying relevant. “My goal is to continue my education and to keep current on the new laws and government mandates,” she says. “It’s a little frustrating since there is always something new to learn, but it keeps it interesting.”
