New Albany, IN (PRWEB) July 23, 2014

Most people know of common ways they can damage their teeth: eating sugary snacks, not brushing and flossing, not seeing the dentist regularly, smoking and using your teeth as tools.

But New Albany dental authority Dr. Ronald Receveur wants to add another common things people do that is harming their teeth: suffering from dry mouth.

“Dry mouth can be brought on any number of ways,” Dr. Receveur said. “A lot of common medicines for things like acne, decongestants for colds and allergies, and asthma can do it.”

Some diseases and less common medical treatments can also lead to dry mouth, the New Albany dentist said.

“The problem is that your teeth need saliva to help wash away and neutralize some of the bacteria that we all have,” Dr. Receveur said. “Without enough saliva, the bacteria can explode and ultimately cause gum disease.”

To help prevent that, Dr. Receveur offers these five tips for preventing dry mouth:

1. Drink lots of water. Water can help stimulate saliva production as well as rinsing out the mouth.

2. Chew sugar-free gum. Gum with sugar in it is another way to increase the bacteria population in your mouth.

3. Sleep with a humidifier. The humid air can help moisten your mouth when you breathe.

4. Talk with your doctor about your medications. If nothing else works, dry mouth may be the side effect of a prescribed or over-the-counter medication. Talk to your doctor about substitute medications.

5. Visit a dentist. Dr. Receveur regularly sees patients with this problem and is happy to help find solutions.

“Dry mouth isn’t a problem unto itself,” Dr. Receveur said, “but it can lead to other problems if you don’t get it resolved.”
