Watchung, NJ (PRWEB) August 12, 2014

Performance Rehabilitation & Integrated Medicine in Watchung, NJ is proud to offer our patients an innovative treatment option, Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy (PRP). PRP has been shown to be safe and effective in treating a variety of conditions ranging from chronic injuries to acute trauma, which may eliminate the need for surgery. PRP treatment is drug-free with a short recovery time.

PRP Therapy is a non-surgical treatment that involves the injection of healing proteins, growth hormones and stem cells from a patient’s own blood directly into the site of the injury. The patient’s blood is drawn and placed into a centrifuge system to separate the platelet-rich plasma from the other components of whole blood. These platelets are packed with growth and healing factors that initiate repair and attract the critical assistance of stem cell. The concentrated platelets are injected into the damaged area under ultrasound guidance to assure accuracy.

A patient can get up to three injections of the platelets within six months. However, a lot of patients have found that after the first injection they can feel a high amount of relief or even complete comfort. With more intense injuries, patients may need more than one injection for a full recovery. Normally, the injection process takes about an hour, which includes recovery time. At Performance Rehabilitation & Integrated Medicine PRP is performed in our on-site state-of-the art procedure suite, by Dr. Joseph Mejia, DO, a Board Certified, and Fellowship Trained Interventional Pain Management Physician.

There have been several clinical studies showing that PRP injections have improved function and decreased pain in various conditions, including but not limited to; elbow, wrist, shoulder, hip, knee, and ankle tendonitis, rotator cuff and partial tears, golfer’s and tennis elbow, and plantar fasciitis.

At Performance Rehabilitation & Integrated Medicine, physical therapy is recommended to assist the patient in regaining their strength, mobility and function. Following the PRP Treatment, there may be some limitation on normal activities for the first few days depending on the area of the injection. Heavy lifting and/or strenuous exercise should generally be avoided for approximately one week.
