Norfolk, VA (PRWEB) January 09, 2015

Mayor Paul D. Fraim, key officials, and members of the Slover Library Foundation gathered together today to celebrate the grand opening weekend of Colonel Samuel L.Slover Memorial Library in downtown Norfolk. The Library, encompassing the historic Seaboard building and the Seldon Arcade, will serve as a center for community learning, leading-edge technology and civic engagement.

The 138,000 square foot library, designed by Newman Architects and executed locally by Tymoff+Moss, included the restoration of the 115-year old Seabord building, an old postal facility built in 1897. Timmons Group, a local leader in multi-discipline civil engineering and professional consulting services, provided site engineering, surveying and LEED-certified guidance for the project. The new library also includes a seven-story glass atrium, technology center, meeting rooms, and the renovation of the adjacent civic building, Seldon Arcade. In addition to over 160,000 books, Slover Memorial Library will offer 130 public access computers, free Wi-Fi, self-checkout, and classes and event programs for people of all ages.

Construction began in June 2012 by Archer Western Contractors and totaled $ 65 million. Funding sources included a $ 20 million donation from Frank Batten Sr., a $ 20 million donation from the Batten Foundation, $ 22.6 million in funding from City of Norfolk, and private contributions through the Slover Library Foundation.

The grand opening weekend provided an array of events, including self-guided tours of the facility, and programs for adults, families, youth and children. All events were free and open to the public. For a full list of weekend events, visit http://www.sloverlibrary.com.
